600 Dancer Invasion: Liepāja Becomes the Movement Capital of Kurzeme

While Riga tries to figure out what folk dances are, 600 dancers in Liepāja prove that movement is life.
The Kurzeme dancing army has mobilized! 25 folk dance groups with 600 warriors from Liepāja, South Kurzeme and Saldus region invaded the Liepāja cultural fortress with the mission "From the Heart – in Dance!" And no, this time the wind wasn't to blame for this mass movement.
Liepāja Children and Youth Center methodologist Marina Vikaine reveals the secret: "It turned out that the concert is in the mood of love in the broadest sense – about dance and friendship. We came up with the title together with colleagues." In Riga, they still think "love in the broadest sense" means extra cards at ticket price.
The daily schedule was as strict as in the army: in the first half, the 4th-12th grade and youth troops danced 31 dances, while in the evening the preschool and elementary school elite units with some youth reinforcements performed another 33 dances. A total of 64 dances in one day – even our famous sea wind would have gotten tired from such intense activity.
"I think these kids consume more energy than Liepāja's entire electric tram system," comments local resident Jānis, who accidentally showed up at the concert looking for a quieter place. "But it's beautiful – finally someone shows that life in Liepāja flows not only through the wind."
Meanwhile, an even bigger dancing tsunami is expected on May 23rd, when folk dance ensemble and youth dancer festivities will take place. City services are already warning: possible traffic disruptions due to spontaneous dance performances on the streets.
