ABLV Bank loses 7.6 million — worse than usual for Riga banks

Representatives of the Cyprus company couldn't understand why their 7.6 million wasn't theirs, while in Liepāja this is called standard banking experience.

The Regional Court confirmed that the confiscation of 7.6 million euros from Cyprus-registered ABLV Bank company accounts is completely legal. Company representatives apparently didn't understand that money laundering isn't the same as money earning.

Lawyer Valdis Kalnbērzs from Jūrmala park, where he likes to stroll among the old trees and think about life's irony, comments: "These people thought the court would be as forgetful as Riga bank supervisors. But this isn't Riga, where everything can be hushed up with the right contact book."

In the proceedings regarding criminally obtained property, the court objectively analyzed the materials and concluded that the money really hadn't been as clean as company representatives claimed. Local bookkeeper Maija Ozola points out: "We in Liepāja know that honest money comes from honest work, not from Cyprus schemes. Seven million — that's like our entire city's annual budget, and we manage with it honestly."

While banks in Riga are still trying to explain where the billions disappeared, in Liepāja we're happy that someone will at least get their due. Even if it's only confiscated, not earned.
