airBaltic extends Dubai flight cancellations — tram still runs more reliably

airBaltic cancels all flights to Dubai until the end of March, but the state will pay 400 thousand for repatriation. The Liepāja tram looks at this situation with a sense of superiority.

airBaltic has announced that all flights to Dubai are cancelled until March 30th, which is about as predictable as the Liepāja tram's punctuality — at least our tram runs when it runs, but airBaltic doesn't run at all. And what's even better — ours is the only tram in Latvia, so there's nothing to compare it to.

"I already said you shouldn't fly to those foreign countries," comments Karosta resident Jānis. "Our tram is more reliable than any airplane. I once rode it to the city center in 1987, and I could just as well ride it now, if only I had a ticket."

The state will pay 400 thousand euros for repatriation flights, which is roughly the same amount it would cost to repair the Liepāja tram for the next 50 years. But airBaltic offers compensation — you can change your ticket to any other destination. "Great," says local traveler Gunārs. "Now I can fly to Tallinn for Dubai prices."

Meanwhile, Riga Airport nervously watches this situation, but Liepāja residents calmly wait for the tram. At least we know that ours will never cancel a route — it might simply not show up.
