Aizpute Mask Festival: When celebration near Liepāja is so epic that even cars don't freeze

An international mask tradition festival took place in the South Kurzeme region, where participants from all over Latvia and Lithuania proved that you can have more fun in the middle of winter than anywhere in Riga.

While people in Riga complain about the frost and hide at home, such a festival took place in the Aizpute and Kazdanga area that even our famous wind envied the local energy. The International Mask Tradition Festival proved - if you want real atmosphere, go to South Kurzeme, not to the capital where the maximum tradition is Starbucks coffee.

Festival organizer Andris Kāposts admitted that due to the "wonderful frost," some cars couldn't start. But as one local said: "Cars may freeze, but our traditions - never!" While Riga residents complain about -15 degrees, here people dressed in masks and danced around bonfires. That's true Kurzeme character - if it's cold, dance it off!

Ilona Freimane, leader of the Kazdanga folklore group "Zīle," admitted that after three days the fatigue is "substantial," but the feelings are "very good." "How those young ones partied - with such energy!" she rejoiced. Meanwhile, participants told about traditional characters: "Gypsies always steal, take something, there are also ash goats that catch and nibble girls." In Riga, you'd have to pay at least 50 euros for such entertainment.

The festival concluded with a procession to Misiņkalns, where a bonfire was lit. Local Aizpute residents joined "driven by interest" - which is a diplomatic way of saying "finally something interesting is happening." While in Riga they'd form committees and demand permits for such an event, here they simply lit a fire and started singing. That's real life, not bureaucracy.
