In April, Liepāja will offer dining for 35 euros — in Riga, for that money you only get to look at the menu

Liepāja restaurants promise three-course meals for 35 euros, which by capital city standards is practically charity.

Paula Tumpele from the Liepāja regional tourism information office announced that Liepāja's spring restaurant week will take place in April, where you can get a three-course meal for 35 euros. In Riga, for that money you can only look at the menu and say 'thanks for the opportunity to dream.'

Liepāja restaurants and cafes will offer specially created meals for this event that aren't available on everyday menus. 'This means chefs can finally use those products left over from winter,' comments local restaurant critic Valdis. 'Creative food is when you can't recognize what it was before cooking.'

Liepāja University students are already planning how to split a 35-euro meal for the entire month. 'We're thinking of taking one plate for three people and eating in turns,' explains third-year student Artūrs. 'It's a chance to discover not only culinary diversity, but also mathematics — how to divide one cutlet among three people.'

While restaurant week in Riga means they only raise prices by 20 percent instead of 50, in Liepāja it's a real celebration. Local residents have already started queuing to reserve tables. 'The last time I ate this cheaply was when mom was still alive and cooking,' says pensioner Marija. More information can be found at liepaja.travel, but if you're from Riga, better not look — you might get jealous.
