April Conference in Parliament on EU Future — First Time Without the Question of Whether It Even Exists

While in Liepāja we've long known that the future is what happens after today, Riga is preparing for an international conference on the art of EU negotiations.
Parliament will host an international conference in April titled "EU Negotiations: Safeguarding the Future," which is already an interesting paradox in itself. While Riga prepares for the art of negotiations, in Liepāja we've long known how to talk about what really matters — for example, whether the tram is running today and whether the Liepāja Museum has a new exhibition about history that's actually interesting.
The conference will be opened by three high-ranking officials who will discuss such complex issues as EU foreign policy, political consolidation, and the multi-annual budget. "I hope at least one of the speakers will be able to explain why our euro coins are still smaller than the old lats," comments local economics expert Jānis from Dārza Street.
Particularly thrilling will be the question of EU enlargement, which the Latvian Foreign Policy Institute calls an "international discussion platform." While the capital thinks about European expansion, in Liepāja we've long expanded our horizons — from the Old Town all the way to Ezerkrasts.
The event will bring together "decision-makers and experts" to promote understanding of Europe's future. The only question is — will any of them be from places where the future is already happening every day, not just at conferences?
