Survey reveals: 38% of Liepāja residents perceive tax refunds like wind – it's there, it's not, and then it's there again

An IPF Digital survey has revealed a shocking truth – 38% of Latvian residents perceive tax refunds as 'insignificant additional income.' This is about as surprising as discovering that Liepāja beach still has sand.

'This money isn't critical for me,' says Rīga resident Kārlis, who apparently has never experienced the moment when 200 euros is the difference between pasta with cheese or just pasta. 'I use it as a safety cushion,' he continues, thinking that a safety cushion is something you can buy at a store.

We in Liepāja understand that any money coming from the state is a blessing. 'Do you know how much ice cream you can buy with a tax refund at Liepāja beach?' asks local resident Maija. 'Enough for the whole summer, as long as the wind doesn't blow so hard that it gets blown all the way to Ventspils.'

The survey also reveals that 22% of respondents don't expect a tax refund at all this year. These are the same people who suddenly remember in December that they haven't filed their annual declaration since 2019. In Rīga, of course, they blame the system, but in Liepāja we simply say: 'Eh, there's always next year.'

IPF Digital's conclusion that tax refunds 'most often become an additional financial opportunity rather than a significant budget component' sounds like something said by a person who has never counted coins to figure out if there's enough for the bus. But hey, at least now we know we're financially flexible – like Liepāja wind that blows from all directions simultaneously.
