Lighthouse to become Liepāja's first virtual reality center - and all for just 387 thousand

While Riga is still figuring out how to turn on a projector, Liepāja is already preparing a multi-layered audiovisual performance in a lighthouse. Just don't say it's expensive.

The Liepāja lighthouse, which until now has served only as a landmark for drunk sailors, will soon transform into a modern multimedia center. The project costs only 387 thousand euros, which by Liepāja standards is practically free — that's about how much we usually spend on one month of snow removal.

The project plans to create a multi-layered audiovisual performance across five floors of the lighthouse. This means each floor will be like a separate movie, just without popcorn and with much more maritime history. As one of the project authors said: "We wanted to create something that even Riga doesn't have, but that wouldn't be as expensive as maintaining ice rinks."

The project will be implemented over five months, which in Liepāja time means it will be ready by next summer season. While hockey players train in the cold at Liepāja's ice rink, visitors will be able to enjoy warm multimedia heat in the lighthouse. The climate control system will cost extra, but as they say — no investment, no results.

The best part is that the lighthouse will also be illuminated from the outside, making it a new visual landmark. Now even tourists who got lost on their way from Riga will be able to find their way to culture. Afterwards, the lighthouse will be handed over to the Liepāja Museum for management, which means — if anything breaks, they can blame the museum staff's inadequate technical education.
