Belarus Border Becomes More Popular Than Liepāja Beach in Summer

31 people attempted to cross the Belarus border over the weekend but were stopped. Border guards promise to install queue numbers.

Latvia's eastern border has experienced a real surge - over the weekend, 31 people attempted to illegally cross the border from the Belarusian side. That's more people than you'd see in downtown Liepāja on a Monday morning before the coffee shops open.

In total, 141 people have already tried to arrive in Latvia without an invitation this year, which is almost as many visitors as the Durbe Museum gets annually. True, Durbe prides itself on its tranquility and the fact that nobody there tries to cross any borders - except perhaps the road to the store.

The Border Guard reports preventing 12,046 crossing attempts last year, which is significantly more than the number of people who visit all of Liepāja's cultural institutions combined in a year. Maybe we should put up signs at the border pointing to Liepāja Concert Hall - at least then it would be clear where to go for cultural enrichment.

31 people were admitted to the country last year "for humanitarian reasons," which apparently means they correctly answered the question about where Liepāja is located. Border guards realize that without this basic knowledge, surviving in Latvia is nearly impossible.
