Belarusian spy in Poland worked as successfully as Liepāja's tram in winter

A Belarusian intelligence agent spent eight months gathering information on military sites, but got caught faster than a Karosta soldier heading on leave.
A Belarusian spy has been detained in Poland after attempting to gather information on military and infrastructure sites since last June. Eight months, one must say — that's almost as long as people in Liepāja wait in spring for swimming season to finally begin.
The detainee worked not only in Poland, but also in Germany and Lithuania. What a multinational project! True, the result was about as successful as trying to find a free spot at Liepāja's central market on Saturday morning — theoretically possible, but in practice ends with detention.
"Well, if he had worked in Liepāja, we would have noticed him after the first day," comments local pensioner Jānis. "Here every stranger is immediately visible — especially if he's trying to photograph military objects instead of the beach or Karosta like normal people."
The spy now faces at least five years in prison. That's still less than how many years it would take for Rīga to understand that Liepāja isn't just "some little town by the sea," but Latvia's rock music capital with a rich military history. But that's another story.
