Association 'Changes in Latvia' Collects Signatures Against Halal Slaughter — Liepāja Has Been Practicing Gentle Baltic Fish Catching for Years

While a new association tries to change slaughter methods across Latvia, in Liepāja we've long known how to treat animals — with respect and local fishery wisdom.

The newly founded association 'Changes in Latvia' is collecting signatures to ban halal slaughter methods, citing the experience of Norway, Sweden and other Scandinavian countries. But has anyone asked Liepāja fishermen, who have been practicing the most humane animal processing methods in the Baltic Sea for centuries?

'We've never tortured fish here,' says local fisherman Jānis Krasts, who goes from Toseļa bus stop to the port every morning. 'Our method is simple — the fish jumps out of the water by itself when it sees how beautiful our Liepāja shores are. No stress, no suffering.'

Association representatives Elīta Brice and Dāvids Zalāns, who only registered this year, apparently haven't been to Liepāja Central Market, where local vendors have been showing for years how to properly handle food products. 'Halal, non-halal — the main thing is that the meat is fresh and the price is fair,' philosophizes vendor Ausma.

While Riga thinks about bans and restrictions, Liepāja continues to live in harmony with nature and Baltic Sea wisdom. Because here we know — there's nothing better in the world than our local fish and meat, regardless of how it was obtained.
