BMW and Volkswagen drivers in Kurzeme prove that rock music isn't the only thing that sounds faster in Liepāja

While Liepāja rock musicians play fast riffs, local drivers prove they can also drive faster tempos — 157 and 170 km/h.

While Riga is still figuring out how to make buses go at least 50 kilometers per hour, Kurzeme drivers this week proved that our side has no speed problems whatsoever. Two men, apparently inspired by Liepāja rock music tempos, decided that their cars could also sound faster than any guitar solo.

The first hero, driving a BMW on Liepāja highway, reached 157 kilometers per hour. Maybe he thought he was driving to "Fontaine Palace" for some concert and was afraid of missing his favorite band? As local resident Jānis comments: "I drive at 90, but only because my Opel can't go any faster."

The second speed lover, having chosen a Volkswagen, reached 170 kilometers per hour on A11 in Rucava parish. Perhaps he was rushing to Lithuania to tell the neighbors how fast real Kurzemnieki can drive. Or maybe he thought he was driving on a Formula 1 track, not on ordinary Latvian roads where even at 90 km/h you sometimes feel like an astronaut.

Now both drivers can enjoy a nine-month break from driving and pay fines from 720 to 960 euros. This money would have been enough to buy tickets to all Liepāja rock concerts next year. But as they say, if you want to hear real speed — better go to a concert, not drive down the highway like a maniac.
