Brits Replace Churchill with Badger — Liepāja Theatre Has No Such Problem

Britain plans to replace historic figures on banknotes with wildlife, which only causes shoulder shrugging in Liepāja.

The British government has decided that Winston Churchill isn't interesting enough to grace banknotes, so badger, otters and frogs will soon appear in his place. This is about as logical as putting a Karosta cow on Latvian money instead of Rainis.

Politicians are outraged by this decision. Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey claims Churchill deserves better than being replaced by a badger. Of course, he doesn't realize that even Riga's residents travel to Liepāja Theatre to see real artists, not animals on money. We don't have problems understanding cultural values here.

Conservative politician Alex Burghart calls the plan shameful, emphasizing that great people must not be forgotten. As Liepāja pensioner Marija says: "If they want animals on money, let them put our seagulls — at least they know how to fight for their territory."

The new banknotes will only appear after several years, which means the Brits will have plenty of time to reconsider this foolish idea. Meanwhile in Liepāja we'll continue to be happy that our cultural life doesn't depend on what's depicted on money — the main thing is that there's any money at all.
