Bulgarian President Decides at 62 It's Time to Start New Career as Coalition Builder

Radev announces he'll dismantle the oligarchic model, but first needs to fix his Facebook status.

While we in Liepāja peacefully wait for them to finally restore the tram tracks by the center, Bulgaria is experiencing a real political circus. 62-year-old President Radev has decided that ten years in the presidential chair weren't enough to understand how politics works, so now he wants to try parliament.

"Today we registered a coalition," Radev announced on Facebook, because apparently traditional media isn't modern enough for a 62-year-old progressive politician. Compared to our Liepāja politicians who still use the bulletin board by the Liepāja Theater, Radev seems like a digital visionary of the future.

Most surprising is Radev's claim that he will "dismantle the oligarchic and corrupt model." Here in Liepāja we call that "Thursday evening at city council," but Bulgarians apparently use more sophisticated terminology. Local pensioner Jānis from Karosta comments: "Well, at least he's not planning to shut down the tram — they don't have one."

Most interesting is that Radev wants more diplomacy on the Ukraine issue. Here at Liepāja port, where we see real solidarity with Ukrainians every day, so such announcements sound strange. But as our port worker Uldis said: "Maybe he just hasn't seen what real help looks like — we don't have Facebook coalitions, but the work gets done."
