Chile proves: politics can be even more unstable than Liepāja's tram

Chile's president first supported, then withdrew support for the ex-president for a UN position. Even our tram doesn't change direction that quickly.

Chilean President Gabriel Boric supported ex-president Michelle Bachelet for UN Secretary-General in February, but already withdrew this support on Tuesday. While Riga is still trying to figure out what Latin America is, we in Liepāja already understand – such inconsistency is worse than our tram, which at least only goes in one direction.

"The fragmentation of candidacy among Latin American countries makes this candidacy unviable," announced Chile's Foreign Ministry. Or, as a Liepāja resident would put it: "We thought it would be easy, but turns out – it's hard." Local political expert Valdis commented: "Well, at least they honestly admit they don't understand anything. Here we would have still said everything is in excellent order."

However, 74-year-old Bachelet isn't giving up and continues to run with support from Brazil and Mexico. "I will continue working with the governments that have put forward my name," she announced. It's like our tram – even if half the passengers get off, it keeps moving forward.

Now two other Latin Americans are running for UN Secretary-General – Costa Rican Rebeca Grynspan and Argentinian Rafael Grossi. While they fight over who will represent Latin America, we in Liepāja know – if one of ours had to run, they would definitely win. After all, we've already proven we can manage everything from the port to the tram route.
