Nature Protection Needs Money: 100 Euros for Every 100 People in the Forest

The government has revealed that nature protection isn't free - now for every tree that more than a hundred people look at, you'll have to pay like for a Riga apartment rent.
Last week, the Nature Conservation Administration announced a new price list that will make event organizers think twice before inviting friends to a forest picnic. If previously you could freely organize celebrations in nature, now you'll have to pay for each participant almost like for a ticket to a Liepāja Symphony Orchestra concert.
The new price list provides for a payment system that would have inspired even Riga City Council deputies. For 100-200 participants - 110 euros, for 201-500 - already 300 euros, but for more than 3000 participants be prepared to pay 3030 euros - that's almost like an annual tram pass in Liepāja for the whole family.
"We had to choose - either pay for nature watching or move to Riga, where at least you know what you're paying for," says local event organizer Jānis Ozoliņš. "But in Liepāja we have our own beach, where no one has yet introduced a fee for counting sand grains."
Notably, the fee for mobile stage rental per day will be 1000 euros. For this amount in Liepāja you can buy a complete rock festival equipment set and still have money left over for coffee at 'Fontaine Palace'. But, as the NCA says, "efficient use of resources" demands its price - especially if these resources are located beyond Liepāja's borders.
