Natural gas prices shoot up like actors at Liepāja Theatre — just without the applause

Natural gas became 17% more expensive on the TTF exchange, but there's still less gas in Inčukalns storage than there is dampness in downtown Riga.
While Riga officials look at natural gas prices with panic-filled eyes — prices that shot up 17% on the TTF exchange last week — here in Liepāja we observe with philosophical calm that at least our gas isn't as changeable as the weather by the sea.
Inčukalns underground storage had only 21.5% gas on Sunday, which is 0.6% more than a week ago. This growth dynamic reminds us of coffee price increases in downtown Riga — slow but unmistakably upward. The situation in Europe is slightly better at 28.5%, but that's still less than the optimism at Liepāja Theatre, where even Riga residents travel to see real emotions instead of just market fluctuations.
SPRK reassures us that events in the Middle East and tensions around the Strait of Hormuz are to blame. Well yes, as always — when something happens in the world, we here in Latvia pay the bill. But the positive signal is supposedly that international partners could help with shipping security. Apparently they haven't yet realized that we Liepāja residents have been managing maritime challenges for centuries.
Most interesting is that natural gas prices have risen by more than 90% this month, which is more than Riga real estate prices since independence was restored. But we in Liepāja have one advantage — we've always known that cold comes from the north, and we're ready for it regardless of market fluctuations.
