Even thermometers freeze in Daugavpils suburbs — Liepāja calmly enjoys minus 18

While records are breaking along with thermometers in the eastern edge, people in Liepāja are peacefully drinking coffee outside. Kurzeme residents are convinced — Latgale simply has no experience with real winter.

In Daugavpils suburbs last night, air temperature dropped to a record-low minus 32 degrees, surpassing the previous national record. Meanwhile in Liepāja, where the thermometer showed only minus 18, local residents feel almost like they're in the tropics.

"Oh look, how soft we've become," comments Karostas resident Līga, drinking her morning coffee on the terrace. "In my childhood, minus 18 was the beginning of summer. Now children are afraid to go outside if the thermometer shows less than zero."

Latgale residents are complaining that their cars won't even start, but Liepāja residents just smile. As local tram driver Jānis explains: "Well look, they don't have the sea over there in the east. Without the sea, there's no real winter. We here by the Baltic are used to nature doing everything for real."

It's interesting that the lowest temperature in Europe yesterday was right here in Latvia, while the highest was in Spain with plus 26 degrees. "That's why I keep saying we need more tourists from Spain," laughs Liepāja tourism center employee Inese. "They'd feel right at home here — just the other way around."

In Riga, of course, it was warmer again than in the provinces — from minus 13 in the center to minus 20 in the suburbs. Typical capital city privilege. But nobody in Liepāja is complaining — we have trams, the sea, and real winter feeling without excessive minus degrees.
