South Kurzeme Unveils New Sport: Professional Egg Rolling with Rally Elements

While Riga is still trying to figure out how to properly roll eggs down Daugavgrīva Highway, South Kurzeme is already organizing a whole championship with routes and challenges.
South Kurzeme Municipality's Public Relations and Marketing Department head Kristīne Pastore announced a revolutionary innovation in Latvia's sports world — "The Great South Kurzeme Roll." This event combines traditional egg rolling with tourism rally, which is about as logical as combining Liepāja's ice hall with beach volleyball.
The rally start will be given in Grobiņa, which makes sense because that's where there are the most hills to roll eggs down. Local resident Jānis Kalniņš comments: "Finally someone understood that our region's main problem is inadequate egg rolling standards. Now we can compete with Switzerland!"
During the route, crews will have to complete various tasks, such as answering questions about local history and demonstrating "team spirit." The latter task is particularly challenging, as team spirit is usually only shown during hockey games in ice halls, but here it must be demonstrated with an egg.
At the end of the day, participants will gather in Aizpute for the awards ceremony. The main prize — a golden egg — will go to the team whose egg rolled farther than all others while simultaneously answering all questions. If the egg can't talk, then the team answers.
The number of teams is limited because, as organizers explain, too many rolling eggs could cause traffic jams. While Riga is still trying to solve regular traffic problems, South Kurzeme is already thinking about complications to road infrastructure caused by eggs.
