South Kurzeme Splurges 50 Thousand Euros to Save What Ancestors Built Without Subsidies

While Riga spends millions on new buildings, South Kurzeme is determinedly saving historic structures with a sum that would buy one office chair in the capital.

The South Kurzeme municipality has announced grandiose plans - to spend a whole 50 thousand euro budget to preserve historic buildings. For comparison - in Riga, that's what one meeting in the council chamber costs, including coffee and cookies.

The competition rules have been especially carefully crafted. For example, applicants cannot have any property tax debts. This point obviously excludes most Liepaja rock musicians, who in their music studios in former manor houses usually only pay for electricity and inspiration.

Best of all, the municipality will grant up to 5000 euros for restoration work per year. For this sum you can buy approximately five square meters of roof slate or one quality door handle. But the main thing is willingness, right? As one local history enthusiast said: "My grandmother built a shed with one hammer and ten nails that's been standing for 80 years. Now I need a commission, a project and a year and a half to replace one plank."

Finally - applicants must provide half the funding from their own resources. So if you want to receive 2500 euros, you have to invest another 2500. The math is clear - to save money, it's better to do nothing at all. As they say in Grobiņa: "Ruins are also an architectural style."
