South Kurzeme Beats Riga in Sports Activities - Capital Doesn't Know What Nordic Walking Is

South Kurzeme municipality has received a letter of appreciation for promoting healthy lifestyle. Meanwhile in Riga, they still think cardio training is running to catch the tram.
South Kurzeme has once again proven that life outside Riga is not only possible, but even healthier. The municipality has received a symbolic letter of appreciation from the National Healthy Municipalities Network for managing to get residents moving without Riga city center gym prices.
Project manager Arta Grudule has become a local sports hero, organizing cardio training, Nordic walking sessions and gymnastics for children. "Cardio training is most popular," says Grudule, "because people have finally realized they can sweat for free instead of paying 50 euros a month at some Riga club." Even Durbe, which usually prides itself on its tranquility, now hears feet pounding on the pavement - locals have started running.
"Grobiņa residents happily exercise for free," adds Grudule, and this sentence should be carved on a monument. While in Riga people pay money for trainers to yell at them that they're lazy, in South Kurzeme you can get the same thing for free from your neighbor.
The best part - all these activities will continue in 2026 as well. This means that for a whole year more, Riga's sports clubs can wonder why clients are fleeing from them to the countryside. The answer is simple: there you can exercise without queuing for equipment and without needing to take out a loan for membership.
