South Kurzeme Municipality Refuses to Finance Film — Not Enough Money Even for Shorter Editing Than Liepāja Wind

The Grobiņa area municipality denies support for a documentary about an MI6 agent, as the budget is as tight as a winter morning at Tošele bus stop.

South Kurzeme Municipality committee chairman Linards Tiļugs announced that the local government refuses to finance the completion of a documentary film about former MI6 agent Vitolds Berķis. The reason is as simple as a Liepāja resident's explanation for why he doesn't go to Riga — no money.

"Sāga Films" company requested help to complete the film's editing, which tells the story of events around Grobiņa. But as the committee chairman says: "Usually, when starting something, you first make an estimate and understand what you can and cannot do." That's about as wise advice as telling a Liepāja resident to plan when the Liepāja wind will blow — this legendary, uninvited guest in any season simply comes when it wants to.

The film gives an important role to the Latvian military pilot school at Grobiņa airfield, but the municipality believes the company should have planned their budget better. That's about as realistic as hoping that this winter won't require dealing with frost-related emergency situations. In Kurzeme, winter is winter, and money is money.

"The committee meeting discussion became quite extensive," says Tiļugs, but in the end they decided that local projects are more important than cinema about spies. And to be fairer, from now on each applicant can submit only one project per year. As one of those present said: "Whoever is more diligent gets more, but now everyone will be equally diligent." Logic as clear as Kurzeme skies on a November morning.
