South Kurzeme Municipality Organizes Memorial Tour: 13 Stops, One Day, Infinitely Many Stones

While Riga is still looking for a place for one memorial stone, South Kurzeme Municipality has already created an entire geological collection.
South Kurzeme Municipality has announced an ambitious plan to turn the Communist genocide victims' memorial day into a real marathon. Starting from Tore station at 2:00 PM and ending at Pāvilosta Centennial Park at 1:30 PM, participants will have the opportunity to visit 13 different locations in one day.
"I've already planned the entire route," says local pensioner Jānis. "I'll start in Vērgale at 8:30, then to Ziemupe, Priekule, and so on. If everything works out, by evening I'll have visited more stones than a geologist does in a lifetime."
South Kurzeme Municipality's public relations specialist Ilze Elbere reminds that organizers provide transportation upon request. "We have a special bus with the inscription 'Memorial Express'," she explains. "Driver Valdis has already tested the route - the record is 11 stops in one day, but he promises to go to all 13 this time."
Meanwhile, hockey team coaches at Liepāja Ice Hall admit that such physical preparation could be useful for athletes too. "If you can run from Vērgale to Pāvilosta in one day with stops at every memorial site, then on ice you'll be like a whirlwind," comments the head coach.
The only problem - organizers haven't planned what happens if someone misses their stop. "Then we'll just go around in circles again," laughs Valdis. "The main thing is to have enough flowers for all the stones."
