South Kurzeme Municipality has decided to be a real big spender this year - budget expenditures will grow by 16.3%. This means that while we in Liepāja are thinking whether to buy coffee on Rozengrāla or Tirgoņu street, they're juggling numbers there like circus artists.
The most interesting part is that revenues are planned to be only 2.8% higher, but they want to spend 16% more. "It's like our family budget," says local resident Valdis, "salary increases by 50 euros, but we want to buy a new BMW." The mathematics here is as clear as our January morning - you see something, but not really.
The largest chunk of money - 34.7 million - they plan to spend on education. That's 46% of the entire budget! Rīga probably thinks they're teaching children with golden chalk. But the best part is that they plan to receive 1.5 times more money from EU projects than before. It's like winning the lottery, except here all taxpayers win. While we in Liepāja are rejoicing over the new playground in Jūrmalciems, in South Kurzeme they plan to spend like real barons.
