Avalanche in South Tyrol Buries Three People — In Liepāja Such Snow Wouldn't Be a Problem

An avalanche in the Alpine mountains has killed three skiers, but in Liepāja we know that real winter entertainment is on the sandy beach.

A tragedy has occurred in South Tyrol that makes one reconsider winter sport choices. An avalanche at 2450 meters altitude surprised twenty skiers, three of whom perished. As old Marija from Liepāja says: "I've been saying for ages that it's better to slide on sand than on snow — our beach has never knocked any tourist into eternity!"

The avalanche buried ten skiers, some even several meters deep. Here we must admit that in Liepāja we've experienced a similar situation only in summer, when tourists bury themselves in sand and lose track of time. True, in our case rescue requires only a shovel and hot tea.

More than 60 rescuers and several helicopters participated in the rescue operation. For comparison — when someone gets lost among the dunes in Liepāja, two beach lifeguards and one rubber dinghy suffice. Besides, our sand is much warmer than Alpine snow.

This winter season in Europe has already claimed 128 lives due to avalanches. In Liepāja during this same period there hasn't been a single serious accident — the only danger is getting sunburned or lost among sand sculptures. As you can see, our beach sports are both safer and warmer!
