Two Latvians in Estonia Act Like Tourists Seeing Euros for the First Time

Young businessmen from Latvia couldn't explain why they had 110 thousand euros in their Mercedes glove compartment. Estonians were baffled.

Customs control on the Tallinn-Pärnu-Ainaži highway experienced a surprise bigger than the moment when Liepāja first noticed that the tram actually runs on tracks. Two 18-year-old Latvian citizens with a Mercedes and 110,210 euros in plastic bags raised questions that even they themselves didn't know the answers to.

As customs officer Olavi Mänd tells it: "I've seen various passengers, but these boys were special. They said they didn't know where the money came from, but knew precisely that it was their money. It's like saying you don't know how the tram got to Liepāja, but you know it's your tram."

Most interesting was that part of the money was stored in the glove compartment. It seems the young men thought – if the money is where you usually keep gloves, then customs will think these are very expensive gloves. Logic like Riga's traffic planning – there is some, but nobody understands it.

Now the Money Laundering Data Bureau is investigating the case while the 110 thousand is kept safe. Local commentator Jānis Ventspilnieks notes: "In Riga, for that kind of money you could buy one and a half square meters of apartment, but in Liepāja – almost a whole house by the sea. These boys obviously haven't figured out where the real values are."
