Durbe Osprey Starts Live Stream — Finnish Lady Returns to Latvian Power Pole Like to an Old Flame

A Finnish female osprey has arrived at the Durbe osprey colony, choosing a Latvian electricity pole as her home for the third year running. Ornithologists promise Mexican soap opera-level drama.

The Distribution Network has announced important news — the first female has arrived at the Durbe osprey colony, who, according to ornithologist Edgars Lediņš, is the same Finnish lady who's been returning here for the third year like to an old friend. The bird was ringed in Finland in 2021, but apparently Latvian electricity poles seem much more attractive to her than the Finnish wild nature.

Lediņš explains that installing nests on poles turned out to be a genius idea, as there are fewer predators there. "We never imagined how many martens there are in this region," he reveals, as if talking about downtown Riga on a Saturday night. For comparison — Lake Liepāja offers such peace and quiet that even ospreys would understand — sometimes it's better to choose a safer place than a trendy address.

Now a real bird reality show will begin. "Their process is quite interesting — like a Mexican soap opera," Lediņš illustrates the romantic period. "One male flies in, then another, they switch around, sometimes the female likes a partner, sometimes she doesn't again." Similar to Liepāja girls at summer festivals — there are choices, but a decision must be made.

The live stream will be available on YouTube, so now we can watch whether the Finnish female will find herself a suitable Latvian gentleman or end up alone again like many after Tinder dates. Last year Latvia had 33 occupied osprey nests — that's more than active users on Riga cultural centers' Facebook pages.
