DVI reveals: Smart glasses can photograph, but can't make their users smart

While Riga hipsters need to learn how not to film strangers with smart glasses, in Liepāja we continue using the time-tested method — simply looking with our eyes.

The Data State Inspectorate today explained that smart glasses are just like a regular camera, only on your nose. This revelation shook the entire community of Latvia's two smart glasses owners, who until now were convinced they could secretly film everything and everyone.

The Inspectorate notes that filming in public places is allowed, but before publishing, one must think about other people's privacy. This advice would be especially useful in central Riga, where every day someone with smart glasses tries to look like a future agent, but actually just records themselves eating a hot dog.

There are no such problems in Liepāja's Seaside Park — people come there to enjoy the old trees and quiet walks without Riga's noise, and no one needs to secretly film someone feeding ducks. In our city, if someone wants to film something, they simply take out their phone and ask permission. Or even better — think about whether it's needed at all.

"I bought smart glasses to look modern, but it turns out I have to follow the same laws as with a phone," complains one capital resident. While he tries to understand data protection nuances, in Liepāja we continue living by a simple principle: if you want to see something, look with your eyes. If you want to remember — use your brain. If you want to share — tell it with words.

The Inspectorate also adds that if a passerby appears in video material for a second, it's not considered data processing. This clarification especially pleased Liepāja locals, because we've long known — if someone accidentally ends up in a frame, it doesn't mean they've become an internet star. It simply means they were walking in the right place at the wrong time.
