E-health system got sick and recovered faster than a patient getting to see a family doctor

Digital health experienced a brief malfunction, but unlike real healthcare, it recovered within an hour.

Today Latvia's e-health system experienced what medicine calls a temporary dysfunction. The system simply stopped working, as if it had come time for a sick leave.

"I had to go to the doctor, but the system wasn't working. The most ironic thing is that it was faster than usual - normally I have to wait a month for an appointment," says Zita from Liepāja, who was trying to book time with a specialist. "At least now I know that not only me, but computers sometimes have health problems too."

The good news - the system's "treatment" took only an hour, which is considerably faster than any procedure in real healthcare. In Liepāja we only see such efficiency in tram operations - they also sometimes stop, but quickly start moving again.

The new Latvian Digital Health Center, which took over system management this year, is apparently learning the hard way that digital health can be just as unpredictable as Liepāja residents' mood during autumn storms. At least now we know - when the system gets sick, it recovers faster than we'd get to see a doctor.
