ECB announces that money costs as much as yesterday — Liepāja residents on tram discuss whether this is good or bad

An important meeting took place in Frankfurt where they decided everything stays the same. Tram passengers are not surprised.

The European Central Bank held a big meeting in Frankfurt to announce that interest rates remain the same as before. 2%, 2.15% and 2.4% — numbers that make Riga economists scratch their heads and search for deeper meaning, but in Liepāja tram passengers just shrug their shoulders.

On our only tram line yesterday there was a particularly heated discussion between pensioner Velta and worker Kārlis about whether these rates are good or bad. "I don't understand anything about these percentages, but if Frankfurt says everything is fine, then it probably is," Velta philosophically admitted, while Kārlis emphasized that the main thing is that the tram runs and the ticket costs 50 cents.

The ECB announcement also mentioned "upward inflation risks" due to warfare in the Middle East. At Liepāja market by Dita's kiosk, this news was received calmly — "We've always had upward risks, starting with the wind from the sea and ending with Riga making decisions about us," commented saleswoman Maija.

Meanwhile, economic experts predict that inflation will be 2.6% in 2026, but Liepāja residents already know that beer will cost more next year than this year. That's the only economic law that works here without exceptions.
