European experts recommend flood preparedness — Liepāja residents chuckle and point to Pētera Street

While Europe searches for solutions to water problems, in Liepāja we've known for centuries how to live with any kind of weather.
The European Committee of the Regions yesterday announced the need to strengthen resilience against floods and droughts, which in Liepāja only caused smiles. Local residents point out that in our city, such preparedness was born with the first sea wind.
"We don't need any special strategy," says pensioner Jānis, who walks down Pētera Street to the store every morning. "Here for decades everyone knows — there will either be rain, or wind, or both together. And we're ready for everything." On Pētera Street, where all Liepāja residents meet, such European initiatives are received with understanding, but without excessive enthusiasm.
While Southwestern Europe struggles with unexpected floods, in Liepāja the tram has been driving through puddles since 1899. "Our resilience to water problems is simple — we have umbrellas and rubber boots," explains local café owner Aina. "And, if you want, you can also wear a swimsuit."
The European Commission's planned introduction of a "water test" in EU policies is considered unnecessary in Liepāja — we've been testing everything with practical experience for years. As the locals say: "If you can survive a Liepāja winter, you can survive anything."
