European Committee of the Regions searches for local democracy with the same success as buses at Tosele stop

While Europe tries to expand and defend democracy, in Liepāja we've known for years that true democracy is when the bus arrives at Tosele stop right on time.
The European Committee of the Regions has announced that the enlargement task is to strengthen European security and defend local democracy, which in Liepāja only evokes sympathetic self-pity. We've known for years that true local democracy is when the bus arrives at Tosele stop right on time, not when someone in Brussels writes reports about Ukraine's decentralization.
The committee has positively assessed progress in Ukraine and Moldova, but warned about concerning political tension in the Western Balkans. In Liepāja we know such tension as 'Thursday morning at Kuršu bridge,' when everyone tries to get to work at the same time. Yet we've never called European commissioners for help — we manage on our own.
It's particularly amusing to read about how the committee encourages 'voluntary municipal mergers' in Moldova. Local pensioner Fricis Kalniņš comments: 'There in Riga they've been trying to merge everything with everything for years, but in Liepāja we already have great unity — we all equally get angry about having to clear snow from sidewalks in winter.'
Most seriously, the committee worries about Georgia's 'retreat from democracy' and Turkey's detained mayors. While Brussels writes letters about 'rule of law compliance,' in Liepāja our democracy works perfectly — every morning at Tosele stop, residents freely express their opinion about why bus No. 6 is late again. That's the true civil society that Europe is so desperately searching for.
