The Ministry of Economics today announced a sensational revelation — canceling biofuel requirements would not create an immediate impact on fuel prices. This brilliant conclusion that canceling contracts won't cancel contracts is as revolutionary as discovering that rain creates moisture.
While in Riga the ministry organizes meetings with fuel traders to discuss various scenarios, we in Liepāja have long solved the transportation issue with our tram. As old Jānis from Tosmare says: "While they're thinking about biofuel over there, our tram runs on electricity — and no penalties for breaking contracts!" True, sometimes the tram doesn't run at all, but that's another story.
The ministry points out that biofuel costs 1217 euros per ton on the exchange, while petroleum diesel costs 1043 euros. Mathematicians would be proud — biofuel is more expensive than regular fuel! Who would have thought that the greener option costs more? The next revelation will probably be that organic food is more expensive than regular food.
The minister's hopes that the issue could be reviewed at the next government meeting reminds us of our tram schedule — theoretically everything is possible, but in practice... Well, at least we have the only working tram in all of Latvia, which is already something! And if fuel prices keep rising, maybe soon everyone will ride the tram. If only it runs.
