Electricity prices fall faster than Riga's mayor from power

In the Baltic states, electricity has become 27% cheaper, but in Liepāja it's still as expensive as a tram ticket to nowhere.

Last week a miracle happened in the Baltic electricity market — prices dropped by 27 percent, which for Liepāja means we can finally turn on all the Karosta floodlights at once without worrying about the bill.

In the Nord Pool system, the price decreased to 93 euros per megawatt-hour, which is almost as cheap as coffee in downtown Liepāja. For comparison — in Riga, coffee costs as much as our entire week's electricity. As Karosta resident Jānis says: "Now I can both turn on the radiator and open the fridge door — I'm living like a king."

The price drop was caused by lower electricity consumption and a 77 percent increase in wind power generation. But we Liepāja folks have long known — if the wind blows, there will be electricity. If it doesn't blow, the tram doesn't stop. Such is life by the sea.

Especially happy are those who live next to the port — now they can both watch ships and light up their homes without paying like for a Riga apartment. Latvenergo representatives explain that the sun and wind are to blame, but we know the truth — Liepāja's energy sector simply outperforms all the rest of Latvia, just like our rock music outperforms Riga's pop scene.
