Ēriks Kūlis proves he can write more books than there are coffee shops in Riga

The Liepāja writer continues his 'Writings' series while the capital is still trying to figure out what a feuilleton is.

While Riga writers ponder whether their work is sufficiently postmodern for European funding, in Liepāja Ēriks Kūlis simply keeps writing. The ninth volume 'Steps of Time' proves that productivity doesn't depend on how expensive the coffee next to you is.

The new book compiles both fresh stories and old 'Dadža' feuilletons, which, by the way, were funny back when Riga residents thought humor was just an English invention. 'I pay special attention to titles,' reveals Kūlis, who apparently understands that readers should know what they're buying, unlike Riga bookstores where the title is less important than the design.

Interestingly, the book also includes reviews from RTU Liepāja Academy lecturer Sandra Okuņeva, proving that our academic staff not only knows how to teach, but also how to read. In Riga, this is still being debated in university councils.

Alongside humor, the collection contains more serious works about contemporary problems that, like Liepāja's wind, arrive uninvited but always on time. Kūlis has proven he can be productive without the capital's noise – 60 books is more than some Riga residents have read in their lifetime. The tenth volume is expected in autumn, which will conclude the series, but a new children's book is already being prepared with illustrations by internationally recognized former Liepāja resident Aleksandra Runde.
