EU discovers that complicated procedures can complicate things - Liepāja Theater offers performance about bureaucracy

While Brussels approves new regulations on adult protection, in Liepāja we've known for decades that the best protection is the warmth of home and neighbors' care.
The European Union announced this week a revolutionary discovery — people who cannot fully protect their interests need help. Such genius only prompted knowing nods in Liepāja, because we knew this back when there was neither EU nor complicated procedures.
Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Justice Lauma Paegļkalna told Brussels about how important it is for people not to encounter complicated procedures. While the capital is still thinking about how to achieve this, in Liepāja we've been solving this issue for years simply — if someone needs help, they go to their neighbor or head to Liepāja Theater, where even Riga residents travel to understand what real humanity means.
"It's never been complicated for us here — if old lady Anna needs help with documents, she goes to Jānis from the third floor, and everything's fine," says local resident Pēteris, who has been helping neighbors with various matters for 30 years. "We haven't needed any EU regulations."
Particularly interesting is that the new regulation provides for improved cooperation in cases where a person's property is located in different EU countries. Liepāja doesn't have such problems — here everyone knows whose garden garlic belongs to whom and which cat lives in which yard. Even if someone goes to work in Riga, the lights in their home stay on for a long time because neighbors take care to make sure everything is in order.
