EU and South America agree on free trade deal — Liepāja wonders why they waited 25 years

After 25 years of negotiations, the EU finally signed a free trade agreement with Mercosur. Liepāja comments: even our wind wouldn't have blown in one direction for that long.

The European Union finally completed what was started last century — signed a free trade agreement with South American countries. After just 25 years of negotiations, we can now freely trade with Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and other countries that most Europeans only know for growing coffee.

The agreement takes effect on May 1st, which is very symbolic — precisely when Liepāja's wind is especially active and could carry any document to South America faster than official mail. This legendary, uninvited guest in any season could have delivered this agreement to Brazil 24 years ago, but bureaucrats chose the most complicated route.

The new trade zone will cover 700 million people and 22 trillion dollars, which is almost as much as Riga spends on consultations about how to better spend EU fund money. Liepāja entrepreneur Jānis comments: "Well, finally! Now I can export our wind to Argentina — there they call it pampas and pay double the price."

Meanwhile, European Parliament deputies are still thinking whether this agreement is good enough, so they're sending it to court for review. In Paraguay, which was the last country to ratify the agreement, locals wonder: "We've been ready for ages — we were just waiting for Europeans to finally understand where South America is located."
