End of February promises Liepāja residents something new again - this time snowy cloudy uncertainty

The Latvian Meteorological Service today announced sensational news - in the last week of February, Latvia will have changeable weather. Liepāja residents, who were expecting something surprising, could only sigh. "Well look at that, I thought this year would be something different," says Aivars from Karosta, who checks the thermometer by his garage every morning. "But no - same old thing: snow, wet snow, thaw. As always."

At the Pīrāga tram stop, residents receive this news with the philosophical calm characteristic of Liepāja people. "There's probably panic in Riga - they're not used to changeable weather conditions," laughs pensioner Maija, who has been waiting for tram route 2 for 40 years. "For us, changeable weather is like daily bread. Whether it snows, rains, or blows - we go to work."

Meteorologists warn that the thermometer could drop below -10 degrees, but during the day there will be positive temperatures. Vendors at Liepāja market receive this information with understanding. "I already started preparing both winter and spring goods on Monday," says Gunārs, who sells home-grown vegetables. "If someone doesn't want to freeze, let them come to us - hot beet cutlets will always be available."

Most importantly, in Kurzeme starting Thursday, the average daily temperature will be above zero. This means Liepāja residents can start discussing again whether they can already take off their winter boots and put on autumn boots. At the beach, this process will happen traditionally - some brave ones are already walking around in shorts, while others are still applying lip balm against frostbite.
