French politicians finally discover what real discussions mean - in Liepāja we call it tram queue conversation

In Lyon, political discussion turned into Fight Club, but in Liepāja we've long known - the best debates happen in Karosta by the old bunker.

Well look at that, France has once again discovered the art of political discussion. In Lyon, four people were arrested in connection with the murder of a 23-year-old right-wing youth. The young man died from brain trauma sustained at a political rally. He was attacked by at least six left-wing extremist representatives.

As my neighbor Dzintra from Green Street says: "The French are strange - they think politics is a combat sport. Here in Liepāja we also have different political views, but we discuss them over coffee at 'Fontē' or on the tram to Karosta."

True, France has its own charm - there parliamentary assistants participate in real fights, not just Facebook comments like we do. But unlike Lyon, in Liepāja our loudest political discussions happen at the Central Market by the potato stand, and the biggest trauma there might be from the overly high prices.

France's Justice Minister has accused left-wing extremists of inciting violence. In Liepāja we also know how to incite - for example, when someone says Riga's beach is better than ours. But at most we raise our voices and wave our hands. Because real Liepāja residents know - the best politics is the kind after which you can peacefully go for a walk by the seaside and listen to the waves rustling.
