G7 Leaders Gather Liepāja Tram Style - Slow but Purposeful
World's largest economies announce unwavering support, while in Liepāja they've been doing this with neighbors for years
G7 leaders have finally issued a joint statement on Ukraine, and it only took a year after Trump's return. In Riga, of course, they're still figuring out how to properly write such a statement, but in Liepāja we've long known - support is like our tram: always there when you need it, even if it runs a bit slower.
'Unwavering support' - that sounds like the foundations of our Karosta buildings. Seven of the world's largest economies announced they support the peace process, but as local pensioner Maija from Pērkones Street said: 'Well, finally they figured out you need to talk to both sides. We've known that in Liepāja for ages - without talking even to your neighbor about fence repairs, you won't achieve anything.'
G7 promised to provide financial support and 'critically important equipment'. In Liepāja we call that 'neighbor help' - when you need a generator or turbine, you can always go to Jānis from the house next door. He has everything you need, and you don't have to wait a whole year to meet with friends and discuss it.
Interestingly, this announcement came from France, which is this year's G7 presidency. In Liepāja the president is chosen based on who can best organize a communal barbecue. Maybe G7 should learn our approach - less protocol, more practical action.
