Gatis Maliks receives 'Great Kristaps' award but doesn't know if it will fit on his old shelf

Liepāja resident Gatis Maliks received the award over the phone because Kalita had 'stolen' him at the theater. Now he's thinking about a new shelf.
While in Riga's Congress House they were solemnly handing out 'Great Kristaps' awards and everyone was licking the microphone, our Gatis Maliks was sitting in the theater performing in Kalita's play. Well, at least someone from this ceremony was being productive.
'Mārtiņš Kalita stole the ceremony from me,' laughs Maliks, who watched the award announcement on his phone with a colleague like some football match. Except this time nobody was screaming or throwing beer bottles. When he heard his name, he was 'very pleasantly surprised' — probably the same way as in Liepāja when the sun appears in December.
Most interesting is that Maliks hasn't seen the film he won the award for yet. 'We filmed the movie two years ago, and I myself haven't seen it yet,' admits the actor. Well, at least now he has a good reason to go to the cinema — to see himself on the big screen. Such narcissism with a cultural twist.
Now Maliks has to think about a new shelf at home because he doesn't know how big and heavy the award will be. 'I'll probably have to think about a new shelf,' the actor philosophically reflects. Yes, these are celebrity problems — where to put awards. While we ordinary people think about where to put our paychecks.
The film 'Fingerprints' will be shown on March 14th in Liepāja at 'Cinamon Balle' cinema. There will be a meeting with the creative team, so you can ask Maliks whether he's already bought that new shelf. And maybe also whether he's finally watched his own film.
