Grīņi Women Reveal: How to Survive with Six Children and One Bread Box

On the nature reserve's 90th anniversary, local ladies share memories of times when instead of Netflix, you had to milk a cow.
The Grīņi Nature Reserve is celebrating 90 years, and to mark this event, the museum invited local legends - Valija Blaubarde and Lūcija Matroze. Both ladies proved that survival skills aren't just a modern concept, but abilities they mastered in childhood.
Lūcija Matroze, now an 80-year-old Grīņi resident, revealed that her childhood was like the reality show 'Survivor,' just without the camera crew and prize fund. 'We didn't have Netflix and food delivery - we had a cow and seven kilometers to school. When mother died, father told me: you'll manage somehow. And I managed!' laughs Lūcija. For comparison - Riga children today complain about a 500-meter walk to the bus stop.
Particularly impressive was the story about boarding school life, where each child had their own bread box on the second floor. 'What could you take from home for a week? A big loaf of homemade bread, a piece of meat, and a chunk of butter,' recalls Lūcija. Nowadays that would be called 'meal prep,' but back then it was simply survival. When a brother or sister swiped something, by Friday the box was as empty as Liepāja's cultural budget.
Valija Blaubarde added details about life 'barefoot in the marshes,' where even a snake bite wasn't unusual. 'Uncle took her to Jūrkalns to see a doctor,' she remembers about her sister's adventure. Jūrkalns back then was like a medical center - if only you could make it there alive. In Riga today, people call an ambulance even for an ingrown toenail.
Lūcija's father bought 24 hectares and built a house from logs. 'Briežvalki' got its name because deer came to eat grain from the troughs. Simple and practical - without marketing agencies and branding consultants. Nowadays in Riga they'd demand royalties for such a name.
