Houses and straw burning in Grobiņa — fire better organized this year than Rose Square festivals

11 straw fires were extinguished in Kurzeme over the weekend, while in Liepāja someone forgot to turn off their stove. VUGD promises to organize cooking classes next year too.
Kurzeme hosted such an intense fire show program over the weekend that even Rose Square cultural events could have humbly stepped into the background. VUGD reports 11 straw fires, five of which occurred in South Kurzeme — right where residents usually pride themselves on their peaceful lifestyle.
In Grobiņa parish, fire proved particularly creative, creating four separate works of art: two of 200 square meters each and two more of 300 and 100 square meters. "It seems to me that this year the straw is better coordinated than our municipal work," comments local resident Jānis. "At least it burns in sync!"
On Saturday in Liepāja on Atmodas Boulevard, some art lover decided to create culinary installations by leaving food on a turned-on stove without supervision. Apartment building residents quickly realized this type of art wasn't to their taste. "In Riga such a performance would cost hundreds of euros per ticket, but we got it for free," laughs neighbor Pēteris.
VUGD reminds that burning straw is prohibited and dangerous, but it seems Kurzeme residents interpret this warning as a challenge. With 29 callouts during the weekend, including five false alarms, VUGD workers certainly won't be able to complain about lack of work this year. At least not as long as straw and the creative nature of Kurzeme residents exist.
