Hardware Store in Grobiņa Transforms into Bakery — Locals Still Trying to Order Nails with Their Cake

Grobiņa's new bakery is trying to explain to customers that instead of screws, they now sell sourdough bread and cakes. The transformation happened in five days — faster than Riga can decide where to open a new café.
A change has occurred at 35 Lielā Street in Grobiņa that confuses local residents more than the question of why the organ at Holy Trinity Cathedral plays so loudly it can be heard even in the courtyard. Where you could once buy screws and nails, they now bake cakes and sourdough bread. Ineta Kupše, manager of company 'Zālītes A,' admits the decision was made in one day, which by Riga standards is practically warp speed.
'It was a difficult period because my sister's husband died. And right then the building owner called,' Ineta explains, revealing that opening the bakery wasn't a long-cherished dream, but rather a coincidence of life circumstances. The new space project took five days, which in Riga would have lasted at least three committee meetings and four approval rounds.
The fact that there's another food establishment next door doesn't worry Ineta. 'I suspect they might be more concerned,' she jokes, demonstrating the practicality characteristic of Grobiņa residents. Local resident Guntis admits: 'On the first day I went to buy M8 screws, but came home with an éclair. The wife was fine with it.'
Company 'Zālītes A' has been operating since 1995, and Ineta admits that although they cook and sell everything, they themselves are meat-eaters. 'But if customers want cakes, then there will be cakes,' she philosophically states, proving that entrepreneurship in Grobiņa is more flexible than Riga's bureaucratic system.
