While people in Riga live in basements for astronomical prices, Liepāja is building 200 apartments with balconies and storage rooms.
Breaking news! Construction work will soon begin on Debess Street in Liepāja, promising to transform our city's housing stock. The company "Hagberg" with a turnover of 37 million euros has decided to build 200 apartments that will be available for both purchase and rent. This means that finally people in our city will be able to live differently than in Soviet-era communal houses.
The Heaven Street project includes four buildings with apartments ranging from 37 to 84 square meters. As local café owner Jānis says: "Finally Liepāja will have apartments with balconies where you can dry laundry without worrying it'll blow away to Ventspils." For comparison – in Riga for the same money you only get a view of your neighbor's wall.
Particularly interesting is that 140 apartments will have affordable rent, thanks to "Altum" financing from the EU Recovery Fund. This means that not only rich people from the capital will be able to afford living in new homes. Liepāja municipality will organize queue formation, so get ready – queues here are as popular as trams during summer season.
The project is planned to be completed in summer 2027. Meanwhile, people in Riga still pay twice as much for spaces one and a half times smaller without balconies. But what can you do – they have neither sea, nor rock music festivals, nor real city atmosphere. We have Debess Street, they only have smog and traffic jams.
