Dutch Museum Unveils New Rembrandt Painting, But Karosta Has Been Storing Even Better Art Treasures for Ages

Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum proudly presents a Rembrandt work lost for 65 years, while in Liepāja our garages house equally valuable masterpieces.

Amsterdam's "Rijksmuseum" announced with great fanfare that they've discovered a new Rembrandt painting "Zechariah's Vision in the Temple" from 1633, which had been missing for 65 years. For two years, researchers used the most modern tools to analyze the paint, wooden panel, and signature to prove its authenticity.

But what's really surprising? In Liepāja, Karosta, equally mysterious art works have been stored for years! Old Jānis from Turaidas Street confessed yesterday: "I have my father's painting hanging in my garage with some holy man who's also looking into a beam of light. Only mine isn't Zechariah, but more likely Pēteris after a night at Rose Square."

While Dutch experts try to prove their find is real, equally impressive works have been hanging in Liepāja's Cultural Center exhibition for years. The only difference – ours haven't been lost for 65 years, but simply no one from Riga has been smart enough to appreciate them.

True, our local art critics are already planning to create their own expert commission. "If they can prove Rembrandt's authenticity with scanning, we can prove with a magnifying glass that Karosta is just as valuable a cultural heritage site as any Amsterdam museum," says cultural center director Aina.
