Hollywood Heritage Goes to Auction: Liepāja Resident Will Sell His DVDs and Promises to Include Movie Tickets Too

While the world pays millions for C-3PO's head, in our city you can get the entire Star Wars collection for two euros at Liepāja market.

While somewhere in distant Los Angeles rich people are preparing to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for a harpoon gun from "Jaws," in Liepāja the situation is much more practical. Local collector Jānis Kalniņš from Karosta has announced that he too will sell his movie collection, but for much more reasonable prices.

As Jānis himself tells it: "My DVDs are just as good as that Hollywood nonsense. Plus, I also have tickets from Liepāja cinema from 1987 — that's real historical heritage! And another thing — my 'Terminator' jacket is more authentic than Schwarzenegger's, because my mother sewed it for me, not some costume designer."

Compared to Riga, where people would pay hundreds of euros for any Hollywood garbage, Liepāja residents are more pragmatic. "At our market you can get the entire 'Star Wars' collection for two euros, and the seller will even throw in homemade pastries. That's what I call real value!"

Although today in Liepāja it's cloudy and foggy weather, local collectors haven't lost their optimism. As neighbor Artūrs says: "What do I need some robot head for half a million? I'd rather buy a new fishing rod and go to the pier. That's where the real spirit of adventure is, not like in those artificial movies!"
