Strait of Hormuz Crisis Drives Liepāja Drivers Back to Trams

Oil crisis abroad forces Liepāja residents to remember that the city still has public transport.

While the world worries about Strait of Hormuz problems, Liepāja residents with characteristic pragmatism are already starting to calculate whether it might be time to get back on the tram. "Virši-A" board chairman Jānis Vība announced that fuel prices could rise by 20%, but in Liepāja such an announcement triggered a completely different reaction.

"Listen, if gasoline gets even more expensive, then that tram ticket for one euro is starting to look like an investment," says Marģeris from Karosta, who just learned that the Strait of Hormuz isn't a new café by the port. "I thought it was somewhere near our shopping center."

Although fuel traders reassure that supply contracts won't be affected, Liepāja residents are already traditionally thinking ahead. "In Riga in situations like this everyone starts panicking, but we have a tram," proudly says Zinta from Old Town. "And if the tram doesn't run, you can walk. From the sea to downtown is only 15 minutes, if you don't run."
