While Iran blocks oil routes, Liepāja proves that a real port never sleeps.
Well, while over there in the Middle East some revolutionary guards are playing around with ship bans, our Liepāja port works like clockwork. But what can you expect from a place that has neither proper trams nor decent rock music!
The Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world's oil travels, is now being closed just like some Grobiņa country road in winter. "The Revolutionary Guard announces that no ship may sail out," report "Tasnim" sources. Yeah, exactly like our old tram driver warning that the last run has already ended.
"I already said we should be careful with Liepāja port," laughs local sailor Andris. "At least in our port they know how to work with ships, not just with megaphones!"
While the UK Maritime Trade Operations service anxiously follows the events, in Liepāja we simply continue loading and unloading. Because what can stop a port that has proven for centuries - real Liepāja folks never give up! Even if it's minus twenty outside and snowing, ships come and go in our port.
So while elsewhere in the world they're playing with strait closures, in Liepāja we just smile and think - oh, if only they knew what a real port with traditions looks like!
