Imants Kalniņš celebrates 85: wants lily-of-the-valley, but will receive Liepāja Metalurgs home game attendance numbers

While Riga composers celebrate jubilees with champagne and orchids, our genius wants only lily-of-the-valley. That's as Liepāja-like as going to a hockey game on a windy May evening.
Musical world sensation! Today the outstanding composer Imants Kalniņš celebrates his 85th birthday, and his wishes are as practical as Liepāja "Metalurgs" fan strategy — lily-of-the-valley, cornflowers and lilacs. While Riga composers celebrate with champagne at 200 euros per bottle, our genius stays true to his roots.
The maestro laconically admits that numbers don't matter, which is a typical Liepāja attitude — we don't know how old we are, but we know when "Metalurgs" plays the next game. "To those who still listen to my music, I wish to be as happy as a child," says Kalniņš. That's almost like a "Metalurgs" fan song after a victory.
On May 30th at "Lielais Dzintars" there will be a concert "Eternal Milky Way Above Our Heads", which is as poetic a title as ""Metalurgs" vs "Rīgas Dinamo" on a winter evening". "Turaidas roze", "Autobuss debesīs" and other artists will participate, whose names sound better than a hockey commentator's voice in the third period.
Meanwhile, on July 25th in Cēsis they will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Imants Day, which is as long a time as "Metalurgs" fans have been waiting for the next Latvian championship. As always, our composer proves that the Liepāja approach to life — simple, heartfelt and with the right priorities — is the best formula for both music and life in general.
